Answer"Natural gas plays an important role in Australia’s energy mix, including as a flexible source of electricity to help keep the lights on."

That’s because gas-fired power stations can be quickly turned up or down which makes them an ideal back up when conditions are not ideal for renewables and demand is high.

Today natural gas accounts for almost a fifth of Australia’s electricity generation.1

This is increasingly important as Australia phases out coal-fired electricity generation and transitions to more renewables like solar and wind.
